To Be Read Lists

Most people I know have a list of books that they would like to read if/when they ever get the time.

My list includes:

Moby Dick
Madame Bovary
Lady Chatterly's Lover
Bleak House
The Razor's Edge
The Painted Veil
my own book, Shadows of Things to Come (not quite in the same league with the others, but still a fun read, I think)

... and many other books that I can't even remember the names of right now

I bring this up because I read something at work the other day - a reading list that someone had compiled. In the introduction to this reading list, this lady stated that the books on this list are her favorites - even though she hadn't read them all yet. Oh, but she intends to. Now, how can you call a book you haven't even read one of your favorites?

I don't know. Maybe she just thought that the titles and the book jackets sounded so good that the books MIGHT become her favorites once she ever gets around to reading them. Still, it's a strange statement to make, huh?

So, pull out your "To Be Read" list, and cross off the ones that you've read as you read them. I just hope you don't call the ones you haven't read your "favorites!"
